Description

Edited by John Elderfield

The Museum of Modern Art houses the most important collection of twentieth-century art in the world, and the masterworks from the Museum’s Department of Painting and Sculpture have fundamentally shaped the way modern art has been perceived. This book opens with an introduction by John Elderfield, The Marie-JosÃe and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture, which traces the history of the Museum’s collection, from 1880 to the present. The six subsequent sections comprise anthologies of texts drawn from the Museum’s archives and publications that offer varying perspectives on specific artworks and on modern art in general. Includes 340 color illustrations.
